The Flea

Here it is, just as promised... The Flea by John Donne

The Flea

Mark but this flea, and mark in this,
How little that which thou deny'st me is;
It sucked me first, and now sucks thee,
And in this flea, our two bloods mingled be;
Thou knowest that this cannot be said
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead.
Yet this enjoys before it woo,
And pampered, swells with one blood made of two,
And this, alas, is more than we would do.

Oh stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Where we almost, yea, more than married are.
This flea is you and I, and this
Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is;
Though parents grudge, and you, we are met
And cloistered in these living walls of jet.
Though use make you apt to kill me,
Let not to that self murder added be,
And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Purpled thy nail in blood of innocence?
Wherein could this flea guilty be
Except in that drop which it sucked from thee?
Yet thou triumph'st, and sayest that thou
Find'st not thyself, nor me, the weaker now.
'Tis true, then learn how false fears be;
Just so much honor, when thou yieldst to me,
Will waste, as this flea's death took life from thee.

A Bee in My Bonnet

Much to my astonishment I’ve recently gone against my nature. Those who know me are well aware of my true nature. I’m quite timorous and also wary by nature even though I wear my heart on the sleeve.

So what have I done? Well… you’ve probably heard the saying “you can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?” and if you’ve read my previous blogs then you know that I’ve been talking about going to Ireland.

Usually when I talk about me wanting to do this or that or going somewhere special I stop at that. I’m content with just talking about it, since the thought of really going through with the idea scares me to death. But NOW, most likely, for the first time in my life I have taken the bull by the horns. I’M REALLY HEADING FOR IRELAND! No, really I am… it’s not just idle talk this time. Believe me yet? If you’re a seeker of the truth, seek no longer. I’m being totally honest… here’s some information…
I’ve booked a flight (Ryan Air) on the 23rd of July and I’m going back to Sweden on Monday the 31st of July. I’ve also made reservations at Jacob’s Inn, a Bed & Breakfast in the central parts of Dublin. I’ve bought train tickets to and from Gothenburg. It’s all settled, I’ve done it all single-handed and damn proud of it too. And you know what? I’m going all by myself… Diana is growing up I think.

Yesterday Marica and I went to the library in Torsby to borrow books. Marica went home with a big pile of novels, and I found myself four books about Ireland which I’ve been scrutinizing since then. My family’s also been tormented with all the information I’ve taken in so far. I’ve a sneaky suspicion that my mother’s anxious that I’ll get lost or something… and perhaps she should be worried seeing that I have no sense of direction whatsoever.

Watch out Dublin, here I come…

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Midsummer came and went and during the 24 hours it lasted I met my elder sister Jessica and her family, my brother Joakim and my cousin Kent. I also went to Faktoriet together with my younger sister Marica. Except from that we ate some good food. This was just a summary… would you like to hear the whole story? Well, you can't. I'm way too lazy to write tonight.

This is I together with Jessica and Håkan's
youngest son Felix.

Isn't he adorable... I'd like to think so.

A Leap of Faith

[Composed yesterday on my way home to Wermland].

[On the bus from Örebro to Kristinehamn, 14.35]
Ok, so I’ve finally decided. I’m going to Ireland all by myself. I know I’ll make it just fine and I’ll probably have a great time. I NEED to take a leap… take a chance, dare to face life with the rucksack on my back and the passport in my hand. Stroll down the streets of Dublin, walk into a pub and drink a pint. Talk to people, perhaps sing an Irish folk song together with the locals. Enjoy myself.

I looked at Ryan Air’s web page yesterday to see what flights they could offer and to what price. On the 14th of July it costs only 79 Swedish crowns. Of course taxes will be added, but it’s still very cheap. I’ve also found a B&B in the central parts of Dublin. That would cost me (for nine nights) about 1000 crowns. I just have to accept the fact that I might be forced to share a dorm with 19 more persons. Breakfast included, apparently (haha), since it’s a Bed & Breakfast. ;-)

Right now I sit on the bus to Kristinehamn. From there I’ll take the train to Torsby. I’m going home to my folks to celebrate midsummer and to spend some time with friends as well. I hope the weather will be fine, because I think Jessica and Håkan brought kubb with them, and it’s not very nice to play kubb if it’s raining is it?

[At Kristinehamn’s train station, 15.45)
One hour to go before the train leaves for Torsby, so I sit here at the train station waiting for the time to pass. However, here I got a hold of a travel magazine where I could read about the green island, Eire. It wasn’t about Dublin though, but Kilkenny. Nice photos… ;-)

Now that I’ve made up my mind it feels really great and I’m really anxious to go. I only wish I could get someone to accompany me… but then again, maybe it’s time for me to do something on my own, to try new things and hopefully grow with the journey.

When I get home to my parents I’d better check my economy to see how much money I’ve got to spend in Dublin. I was talking to Martin the other day and he told me that his sister lives in Blackrock, Dublin, and maybe I can stay at her place for a small amount of money. It would be cheaper than to stay at a hostel. However, she doesn’t live in Dublin city, so I’d have to go by bus if I’d want to go to the central of Dublin. And that would cost me some money wouldn’t it? What to do? Either way I have to book the flight and B&B as soon as possible.

Now I’ll shut the computer off and listen to Quilty instead. Irish folk music at its best…

[On the train, 16.45]
Wow, they’ve replaced the old trains with new ones. Spacious, fresh and modern… I’m impressed. At a train like this I could sit for hours…

I just spoke to Lotta who’s on her way to Hälsingland to celebrate midsummer together with her family. She’s all excited about me going to Ireland. Well then, why can’t she come with me? Isn’t there anyone who would like to go to Eire with me? Perhaps Pernilla, my big sister? But she’ll probably be busy taking care of her Highland cattle. So alone it is!

My hangover is more or less gone and I’m kind of starving. It was so sweet of Anna-Karin to buy me a baguette, coca cola light, bananas and water for my trip home. She and her fiancé were also kind enough to drive me to the train station. She knew I was all out of money and perhaps she took pity of my sorry ass. Anyway, the food is gone, my coke is gone and I only have a small amount of water left… Will I survive until I reach Bada Bruk? Probably not! J

BTW, I promise you that I will quote a poem later on, a poem by John Donne called “The Flea”. A-K and I have had many laughs about it… ;-) Why? Well, you do your own interpretation.

Karaoke i Götet

Lite fler bilder från min och Lottas vistelse i Göteborg. Dessa kommer från en karaokebar på Avenyn och finns att se på www.karaoke.info.se

En öl i baren medan den rockiga indianen sjöng Smoke on the water.

SWEDEN WON!

The Rambling Irishman...

...so much have happened during the past weeks and I don't even know where to begin. I've been out partying together with friends, having a good time, meeting new friends, getting appreciation and compliments... and you know what? I've really been in great need of some good time, so it felt... well... really good.

This weekend I and Lotta went to Gothenburg to participate in FIPLV WORLD CONGRESS LMS SPRÅKDAGAR. It was great getting the chance to meet people from all around the world. We exchanged adresses with a girl in Germany (Tessa) who actually lived in Falun a couple of years ago (she knew some Swedish). And we met this lovely woman called Jenny Norris, who comes from England (she lived in Sweden for two years in the 60s and she still remembered some Swedish). She said that if we'd ever get to England we could ring her. (since blogger can't publish pictures any more as it seemes you have to click on this link in order to see the photo)

What more... well we met two teachers from Härnösand, Edgar and Sven-Erik. Edgar, could only speak Spanish and some (bad) Swedish. Sven-Erik spoke German, Spanish, English and of course Swedish. We also met Barbara whom we know from Falun. She originally comes from New Zeeland but have lived in sweden for about 20 years I think. She also speaks French. All of us got together, went to a pub and watched the football game. We drank, sang and laughed... a lot... and since we all spoke all these different languages we mainly kept to English so we had to translate to poor Edgar who didn't know any English at all. Oh, by the way, SWEDEN WON! ;-)

Later that evening Lotta and I went to a karaoke bar, sang a little and met even more interesting people.

After that I and Lotta went home to Annes Hus for a good night's sleep...

Last night we went to a place called Nivå together with Lotta's cousin Jenny. At first I was tired and didn't feel so good considering the night before. BUT, then we met a group of irishmen... in fact there were 25 of them (if I didn't get the number wrong), but some got lost on their way to Nivå. ;-) All of a sudden I wasn't that tired any longer - imagine that. They were in Sweden on a stag weekend. They were so nice talking to and funny as well... There was this really cute guy called Peteand guess what? (again :p) He knows how to play the Bodhran... I love Irish folk music and there I was talking to a guy who knows how to play the Bodhran and so good that when he was younger he participated in Bodhran competitions! He grew tired of it though so now he appearently surfs instead(?!). I was sooo impressed by his skills... hehe... and you just have to love the irish accent... and I was told that I speak very good English... ;D You'd believe anything as long as it's uttered with an irish accent! I don't have a photo of him though, I totally forgot... and Lotta was somewhere else with the camera anyway so... BOLLOCKS!

Ireland Love You
But all in all... I am very pleased with my stay in Gothenburg...

That's all for now...

Lady Di - ready for the ball!

Ok... here it goes... you might remember that I said that I wouldn't weigh myself for a while and that I would wait until the 29th of May to do so. Well I did weigh myself that very day... and to my great satisfaction the scales showed 69,8... That means I've lost ten kilos in nine weeks. Since I resisted the scales for a few weeks I didn't feel the same stress as I usually do when I'm trying to loose some weight. I'll just take each day as it comes and be happy about my success this far. My next weighing date is due to the 12th of June, the same day as the scool ball.

Speaking of the school ball, I received my ball dress today and it was quite a nerv-racking moment before I could try it on. I feared it would look awful and that it would be too small or too big, but it fitted like a glove. So the ball dress issue is now settled and the only thing I need is a pair of pearl earrings to go with my pearl necklace.

From one think to another. My brother met Sutida on the Internet and she is here in Sweden right now. I asked my brother for a photo because I was quite curious about what she looked like, and now I know. ;-)

My brother Joakim and Sutida.
Don't they look cute together?

I've cried today...

...but it was tears of both joy and sadness. Almost the whole staff got together this evening at Borlänge Wärdshus to eat a nice dinner, drink some wine or/and beer, sing and laugh and of course enjoy each others company.

The purpose was to thank those who are going to leave Mjälgaskolan. I'm one of those... there's no longer any need for me at this school and they have to let me go. This autumn I will have a teaching post at Domnarvets skola in Borlänge instead. Anyway, tonight when Sven-Erik held a speech I was so moved that I started to cry. I felt this sadness overwhelming me, realizing that this was the very last dinner together with these wonderful people. They had been there for me when I needeed it the most, they helped me through my separation, hugged me and comforted me. They dried my tears and made me laugh again. I don't know what I would have done without them. They were the friends I needed and the family I was in desperate need of. You will forever be in my heart. I'm so grateful.

I still cry sometimes, but I don't show it to you. I have to find my own way and try to forget the love I lost. But it's hard... too hard and I feel so lonely at times. Still I can't express my feelings to anyone. I keep them locked inside my box of secrets and for now the box will stay closed. I wonder if there ever will be anyone brave and loving enough to be able to open it again...

I will miss my wonderful students as well... they too helped me through the hard times, gave me moments of forgetfulness and moments of laughter. Many times I felt elated when I left work thinking of my students and their pranks, jokes and great humility. For two days in a row they have come to me with pastries, like a swiss roll and a cream gâteau saying they will miss me, that I'm the best teacher they've ever had, that they have had great times together with me and that they love me. They are so kind, loveable and generous and I will deeply and truly miss them. How could I not!? I feel such gratitude that I had the chance to teach them.

I will end this quite depressing blog with a quote from a book I've read... perhaps it'll bring hope and confidence to all downhearted men and women out there... (It'll be in Swedish though).

Ibland dyker det upp en vind
som blåser en ur kurs.
Man är inte redo för den,
men om man har tur
hamnar man på ett ställe
som är intressantare
än vad man hade tänkt sig.
